Jakarta, — Thousands of Jakarta residents crowded the Car Free Day (CFD) area along Jalan Sudirman to Thamrin on Sunday morning. This weekly event, held every week, once again became a favourite gathering spot for the community to exercise, relax, and enjoy the pollution-free atmosphere free from motor vehicles.
Starting at 6:00 AM, residents from all walks of life were seen enthusiastically participating in the CFD. Various activities were carried out, ranging from jogging, cycling, group exercises, to hobby communities showcasing their activities. Children were also seen joyfully playing with their families.
The Jakarta Provincial Government stated that the CFD aims to reduce carbon emissions and raise public awareness about the importance of a healthy lifestyle and the use of environmentally friendly transportation.
“This CFD is part of our efforts to promote a healthy lifestyle and create a cleaner city,” said Jakarta Transportation Department Head Syafrin Liputo, as quoted from the official Jakarta Provincial Government website (jakarta.go.id).
Transportation Department and Public Order Agency officers were stationed at various points to ensure safety and order during the event. Additionally, public facilities such as drinking stations, health posts, and public toilets were provided to enhance residents’ comfort.
According to data from the Jakarta Environment Agency, the consistent implementation of CFD has contributed to a 30% reduction in carbon emissions in the Sudirman–Thamrin area during its implementation hours (Source: Jakarta Environment Agency, 2024).
The CFD event will continue to be held every Sunday morning, except when there are major national or international events that require the temporary suspension of this activity.
