Floods Hit Parts of Sumatra Island, Thousands Affected


Continuous heavy rainfall over the past few days has triggered widespread flooding across parts of Sumatra Island. Rivers overflowed, inundating residential areas and disrupting daily activities as water levels rose steadily.

From western to southern regions of Sumatra, floodwaters entered homes with varying depths, forcing many residents to evacuate with only essential belongings. Children and the elderly were among the most vulnerable as communities struggled to cope with the worsening conditions.

Muddy water filled narrow streets, leaving behind debris and a strong smell of damp earth. While some residents chose to stay and protect what remained of their homes, others relied on volunteers and emergency teams to reach safer shelters.

Local disaster management agencies, assisted by volunteers, continue evacuation efforts and damage assessments. Emergency aid has begun to reach affected communities, although access to several areas remains limited due to high water levels and unfavorable weather.

As rainfall is still expected in several regions, residents are urged to stay alert and follow official guidance, hoping the rain will soon subside and life can gradually return to normal.

During the presentation, Muhammad Nabhan Afrizal explained the concept of the Inverted Pyramid, a widely used structure in journalism. He described the inverted pyramid as a method of arranging information by placing the most essential facts at the beginning of the news story, followed by supporting details and additional background information.

Nabhan emphasized that this structure helps readers grasp the main point of the news quickly. “Readers today tend to read quickly, so the main information should appear in the opening paragraph,” he stated while discussing the importance of prioritizing crucial details. He also presented a diagram illustrating how the inverted pyramid guides the flow of information from the most important to the least essential.

He further explained that this structure simplifies the editing process, as editors can trim the lower sections of the article without removing key information. Nabhan’s explanation covered the purpose of using the inverted pyramid, its advantages in digital media contexts, and examples of how it is applied in news writing.

The First Village-Level MTQ of Karang Anyar Successfully Held

Karang Anyar — The Government of Karang Anyar Village, Kemiri Sub-district, successfully organized the First Musabaqah Tilawatil Qur’an (MTQ) at the village level on Sunday, November 9, 2025. The event took place at the Karang Anyar Village Office and was attended by participants representing all hamlets within the village.

The implementation of this MTQ marked an important milestone for Karang Anyar Village, as it was the first time such a religious competition was held at the village level. The event aimed to strengthen the community’s love for the Qur’an, encourage Islamic values in daily life, and nurture young talents in Qur’anic recitation.

Several competition categories were contested during the MTQ, focusing on Qur’anic recitation and other related branches as determined by the organizing committee. Participants demonstrated strong enthusiasm and confidence, while residents actively attended the event to support the contestants.
The opening ceremony was attended by village officials, religious leaders, community figures, and local residents. The atmosphere throughout the event was solemn, orderly, and filled with a sense of togetherness. Community participation reflected strong support for religious development activities in the village.
According to the MTQ organizing committee, the First Village-Level MTQ of Karang Anyar was designed not only as a competition but also as a means of religious education and character building.

“This MTQ serves as a platform to discover potential qori and qoriah from Karang Anyar Village and to strengthen Islamic brotherhood among the community,” said a representative of the organizing committee.

The village government expressed hope that this MTQ would motivate the younger generation to actively engage in religious activities and improve their understanding of the Qur’an. Furthermore, the event is expected to become an annual agenda and serve as preparation for higher-level MTQ competitions at the sub-district level.
With the successful implementation of this first MTQ, Karang Anyar Village reaffirmed its commitment to fostering religious harmony, strengthening social bonds, and promoting Qur’anic values among its residents.
